What is a limited obstetrical ultrasound and why should I get one?

An ultrasound is a diagnostic image created using high frequency waves to see inside the body. It’s an extremely safe test and is routinely used during pregnancies.

A positive over-the-counter pregnancy test indicates an elevated pregnancy hormone in the urine. They are reasonably accurate; however, to confirm a viable pregnancy, an ultrasound is performed. If the ultrasound indicates a baby in the uterus with a beating heart, the viability of the pregnancy is confirmed.

How soon can a limited obstetrical ultrasound be performed?

An ultrasound can be performed beginning at six weeks of pregnancy.
